It's a blood pack under the actor's clothes, made to explode (for gun shots or knife stabs).

Close... a squib is the name for the explosive charge that is used in the blood pack... when it is all built we call it... a blood pack. Squibs are also used for wall hits, in glass breakers, etc...

remember to put a 1/4" steel plate behind the squib or the actor will have a nice gapeing hole in his/her body. I've never used them but I've heard that using them as compared to non-explosive blood bags is better for the actors cause there is a bit of real pain involved as well as an actual explosion.

Yeah, I like the idea of feeling a little pain when the squib blows.

An alternative is shown here. Watch the videos, they are amusing.

    Question

All very interesting guys, but I need to source some blood packs for a small project I am working on. Any ideas of suppliers in the UK?

I tried what was on the exposure site and it wasted to much time trying to get it right, though in hi- insight i reckon it would work if you used one of those soda strea,m co2 canisters as the charge.

I dunno, maybe I'm wrong but I think teh simplest way to get a blood pack is just to make it yourself. Since the explosive charge is not contained in the pack, it stands toreason that a sandwich bag or something filled with whatever blood concoction you're using will do the trick.
